Baby Update: 11 Weeks

My son is now eleven weeks old.

It’s been a wild ride… and he can’t even roll over yet.

First and foremost, I have to say: Adam is adorable. One of the all-time cute babies.

Seriously, the kid could be a model. Look at this image of Adam compared with some random baby model I found.

Indistinguishable.

In fact, there’s a nonzero chance both pictures are actually Adam. Prove me wrong.

In any respect, I’m blessed with a beautiful baby. This kid can get it.

Of course, it’s mostly in the genes. As a half-Malaysian, half-American child, Adam got the best of both worlds. Some people say he looks like me, my father, or my grandfather. He also has clear remnants of my wife and her parents. It’s a unique Pan-Asian look that will never get old.

Adam has an interesting heritage that should serve him well in the long run. Interracial babies often grow up to be smarter, healthier, and more attractive adults. The benefits of genetic diversity are real.

Diverse Parental Genes Lead to Taller, Smarter Children

My wife and I are about as genetically diverse as you can get. I’m a white American of German/Irish lineage, while she’s an ethnic Malay with some Afghan blood.

Thanks to this, Adam is at a low risk for genetic disorders and should have a robust immune system.

Did I mention he’s adorable?

He’s also probably a genius. Here we are reading a book together.

Adam goes nuts when I read to him. He has no idea what any of the words or pictures mean, but he flaps his arms and legs and gets SO PUMPED UP. It’s adorable.

Of course, there are trying times as well. Some nights he just cries and cries. It doesn’t seem to matter what we do, he’s inconsolable. We’ll feed him and hold him and rock him and sing to him, but he refuses to wind down.

I don’t really mind changing diapers. I can do diapers all day. The real challenges are keeping him fed, keeping him entertained, and getting him to sleep on our terms.

But we’re all learning. Adam is our baby, and we’ve embraced our own parenting style. We’ll decide how to raise him, what to teach him, and how to structure his life. Sometimes we’ll screw up, but other times we’ll hit the sweet spot and reveal something awesome.

A few random things I love:

  • Watching him stretch
  • Singing songs at bath time
  • Goofy, toothless grins
  • Naps on my chest

In the end, it’s about taking things day by day. Babies change so fast, and it’s exciting to tick off milestones but I don’t want to get ahead of myself. Soon he’ll be crawling around, asking questions, and making a mess at the dinner table.

For now, he’s just a sweet, little, angel, and we couldn’t ask for anything more.
